Independence Day is a Popular Date for Naturalization Ceremonies
The July 4 holiday is a fitting time to take the oath of U.S. citizenship and many courts across the country hold naturalization ceremonies at historic locations in their community. The 2012 highlights included:
District Judge David Waxse (D. Kan.) presided at the Overland Park, Kansas ceremony, administering the oath to 95 new citizens in 104 degree heat. Congressman Kevin Yoder was a featured speaker.
District Judge Michael Telesca (W.D. NY) and Bankruptcy Judge Paul Warren (W.D. NY) conducted an oath-taking ceremony on the steps of the circa-1822 Town Hall at the Genesee County Village and Museum in Mumford, New York. Forty new citizens from 24 counties participated.
Chief Bankruptcy Judge Peter Bowie (S.D. Calif.) presided over a naturalization ceremony on the aircraft carrier, USS Midway, now a museum in San Diego. Thirty-six sailors, Marines and soldiers from 19 countries, became U.S. citizenship during the ceremony.
