Overview of the Position: | The U.S. Pretrial Services Office for the Middle District of Florida is currently accepting applications for the position of Pretrial Services Technician in Fort Myers, Orlando, or Tampa, Florida. The Middle District of Florida consists of five divisions: Jacksonville, Ocala, Orlando, Tampa, and Fort Myers. The assignment of a duty location is at the discretion of the chief pretrial services officer. More than one position may be filled from this recruitment. This position will be under the direct supervision of a supervisory pretrial services officer. The Pretrial Services Technician provides technical, administrative, investigative, and case management support to pretrial services officers and other members of the court unit. This includes assisting with performing pretrial investigations, assisting with supervision of persons on pretrial release or diversion, and assisting with detained cases. The incumbent will assist with administrative support by assisting with database entries, managing electronic case files, and providing receptionist coverage and completing general clerical duties as needed. |

Position Description
The U.S. Pretrial Services technician:
- Assists pretrial services officers in gathering and verifying criminal records and personal history information of persons charged with federal criminal offenses. Assists officers with preparing written reports to the court prior to defendant’s initial appearance, detention, or violation hearing. Gathers criminal history records by querying various databases.
- Assists officers with supervision of selected caseloads which may include telephone and office contacts. Assists with maintaining electronic case records through national databases. Assists with periodic record checks on caseloads, including detained cases.
- Performs district-wide GPS point reviews and mapping on a daily basis in support of the district-wide location monitoring program
- Assist with general office coverage duties such as, but not limited to, reception duties, and general clerical work
- Assists officers in responding to collateral requests for information from other federal law enforcement agencies
- Collects observed urine specimens from same-sex defendants and maintains appropriate records
- Performs other duties as assigned
Qualification
High school graduate or equivalent required, plus two years general experience which is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates the possession of, or the ability to acquire, the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position. Clerical experience obtained in a court or related legal field is preferred. A basic knowledge of the criminal justice system is preferred.
Applicants should have the ability to give and receive accurate and timely information, and the ability to work independently, yet cooperatively with others in a fast-paced environment. Excellent written and oral communication skills, good knowledge of, and skill in, the use of computers, software applications, and typing ability required.
The successful candidate will also possess:

- Demonstrated computer and keyboarding skills
- Ability to work with a wide variety of people with diverse backgrounds both in person and on the phone
- Good knowledge of office procedures, practices, and processes
- Fluency in Spanish is helpful, but not required

Starting salary depends upon experience, qualifications, and funding availability. This temporary position may become permanent or continue past the initial NTE date without further competition. Additional promotion potential to CL 24 without further competition.
