| Overview of the Position: | The Federal Public Defender’s Office for the Central District of California (FPD-CAC) is accepting applications for full-time attorney to specialize in handling post-sentencing proceedings, which will primarily involve supervised release and probation violation hearings. The attorney will be stationed in Los Angeles, California, but may need to make court appearances in Santa Ana and Riverside. Position Description
The attorney will represent indigent individuals charged with violating the conditions of their supervised release or probation. Core job duties include appearing on behalf of clients in court hearings, including preliminary revocation hearings, evidentiary hearings and sentencings; preparing for and examining witnesses during evidentiary hearings; visiting clients in jail; connecting clients with services with help from the office’s Social Support Unit; negotiating with the U.S. Probation Office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office; collaborating with investigators, paralegals, and other staff; and drafting any necessary legal briefs and memoranda. The attorney must be available to work during regular business hours, and when necessary, during evenings and weekends. Upon completing a probationary period, the attorney may work remotely up to two days a week, depending on their court calendar.
Qualification
Requirements: All applicants must have graduated from an accredited law school and be members in good standing of the California Bar or must be willing to sit for the next California Bar exam. Preference will be given to applicants with at least three years of experience in state and/or federal criminal law or applicants with federal judicial clerkship experience, but neither is required. Experience or a commitment to working with culturally diverse populations and marginalized communities is also desired. The attorney must have reliable transportation and be willing to travel within the Central District of California as necessary.
Selection Criteria: Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to indigent criminal defense and/or public interest law; must have superior oral and written communication skills; possess excellent research skills; and work well in teams. A background investigation is required as a condition of employment.

This is a full-time, at-will position. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience and is subject to direct deposit.
