AO Publishes Annual Report and Court Statistics

Published on March 13, 2018

The Judiciary confronted many challenges in 2017 that reinforced the importance and value of court employees working together through “a coordinated and unified approach.” That was the message from James C. Duff, the director of the Administrative Office on the U.S. Courts (AO), in his annual report on the activities and the state of business of the U.S. courts published today.

The Annual Report of the Director highlights the Judiciary’s efforts throughout the year to continue the vital mission of the courts while containing costs, including the assistance provided to courts hard hit by a series of devastating hurricanes in 2017. Duff also noted that the Judiciary surpassed its space reduction target, efforts that will save over $25 million annually in rent.

A second report, the 2017 Judicial Business of the United States Courts, provides statistical tables about federal cases filed by circuit, district, and offense or nature of suit, among many other topics.

By federal statute, the AO reports each year on the activities and business of the U.S. courts.
