Abstract:
Many American criminal justice professionals and academics are familiar with the name of John Augustus, often termed "the father of probation." Most are much less familiar with two other early formative influences on probation, Peter Oxenbridge Thacher in Massachusetts and Matthew Davenport Hill in England.
