Abstract:
The authors review major reforms in California probation policies in the last decade under the impetus of "Public Safety Realignment," which sought to further reduce the reliance on prison incarceration by making county probation agencies responsible for a large segment of non-serious and non-violent prison releases, as well as offenders who were previously eligible for release from prison whose sentences were "split" between jail and community supervision.
